The Indo-Iran conflict is rapidly changing global energy and diplomatic alignments. India’s renewed cordial relationship with Russia is seen as a clear sign of this shift. What seemed like India’s strategic security relationship with Washington a few weeks ago is now turning towards pragmatic, interest-based relations focused on ensuring energy security due to the Iran war. India has already demonstrated its renewed engagement with Russia by approving the purchase of $25 billion worth of arms and military equipment from Russia on March 27. This includes fighter jets, S-400 air defense systems, armed drones, anti-tank munitions, and various other defense matériel. This move aims to modernize India’s defense system and enhance its strength, following last year’s conflict with Pakistan. Similarly, last month, the Modi government approved the purchase of $40 billion worth of arms, including Rafale fighter jets, from France for the same purpose. Analysts consider India’s $25 billion arms deal with Russia particularly significant, especially given its membership in the Quad, a strategic security alliance with the US aimed at countering China. Relations between India and the US had fractured significantly after former US President Donald Trump imposed heavy tariffs on Indian exports. The current energy crisis following the Iran war clearly indicates India is distancing itself further from the US.
